Descript’s headline prices look simple: Free, Hobbyist, Creator, and Business. The difficult part is that the subscription is only half of the calculation. Every plan also has a media-hour allowance and a separate AI-credit allowance—and those two meters run out for completely different reasons.

Which Descript plan is worth it?
Creator is the best-value plan for most regular podcasters and YouTube creators. At $24 per person per month on annual billing, it gives you 30 media hours, 800 monthly AI credits, 4K export, the complete Underlord toolset, stock media, and the ability to buy top-ups.
Hobbyist is sensible if you publish occasionally, stay below 10 media hours, and only need 1080p. Free is a proper workflow trial, not a sustainable production plan. Business becomes worthwhile when several people need shared branding, translation, custom avatars, priority support, or consistently more AI capacity.

All paid prices are per person. Creator can scale to three people and Business to five, but those are not five free seats—the additional editors are billed separately. Media hours and AI credits contributed by editor seats are pooled at the Drive level.
The table gives the official allowance, but it does not yet tell you which plan is economical. To answer that, you need to know what Descript counts as media and which editing actions spend AI credits.
The real cost of Descript is not just the subscription
Descript uses two kinds of usage currency:
- Media minutes are consumed when you import or record audio, video, Rooms sessions, screen recordings, webcam recordings, or microphone recordings.
- AI credits are consumed when you use features such as Underlord, Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Green Screen, Eye Contact, Regenerate, generated media, dubbing, or avatars.
That distinction matters. You can stay well within 10 media hours and still use AI credits quickly if you repeatedly run enhancement and generative tools. The opposite can also happen: a creator who mainly edits the transcript manually may use many media hours but relatively few credits.
This is why I do not recommend choosing a plan from the number of podcast episodes alone. Your recording length determines media usage; your editing habits determine AI usage.
How Descript media hours work
A media hour is not simply “one hour exported.” It measures media imported or recorded in Descript. Upload a 30-minute video and you use roughly 30 media minutes. Record a one-hour session in Descript Rooms and the session uses one media hour.
Descript says a Rooms recording is counted by session length rather than multiplied by participant count. A one-hour session with five guests therefore uses 60 minutes, not 300. Still images count as one second each.
Monthly plan media minutes reset and do not roll over. That makes consistent monthly publishing easier to budget than batch production. If you record eight episodes in one month and none the next, you cannot borrow the unused allowance from the quiet month.
Example: a weekly podcast
Four 60-minute recording sessions equal about four media hours before allowing for trailers, pickups, and other assets. On media allowance alone, Hobbyist’s 10 hours looks comfortable. Whether 400 credits are enough depends on how often you apply Studio Sound, filler-word removal, Underlord edits, clips, and generated media.
Example: a weekly talking-head channel
If each published 15-minute video begins as a 30-minute recording, four videos use about two media hours. Again, media is unlikely to be the bottleneck. AI polishing, 4K export, stock media, and clipping are stronger reasons to consider Creator.
How Descript AI credits work
AI credits are less predictable than media hours because different tools charge differently. Manually applied effects generally scale with the length or size of the job. Generative tools also vary by the selected model. Underlord is non-deterministic: the same kind of request can cost different amounts depending on what the agent decides to do.
There is another detail I would not ignore: chatting with Underlord consumes credits, even if the conversation does not result in a visible edit. When Underlord runs an effect, Descript can charge for both the agent’s reasoning and the tool itself.

These are guidance figures, not a guarantee. Descript can change model pricing, and a generative workflow is inherently less predictable. The most reliable test is to process one representative episode, then open Settings → Usage and review exactly where the credits went.
Descript Free: useful trial, tight production limits
The Free plan includes one media hour each month, 100 AI credits as a one-time allowance, 720p watermark-free export, unlimited projects, dynamic captions, transcription, and limited access to Underlord and AI tools.
I think this is enough to answer the only question that matters before paying: Does editing media through a transcript feel faster to me? Import a real 20- to 40-minute recording, correct its transcript, remove a section, try captions, and run one or two AI features. A tiny demo does not expose the workflow’s strengths or annoyances.
It is not a realistic long-term plan for a weekly show. The one-hour media limit is small, and the 100 AI credits do not refresh monthly. The lack of 1080p or 4K also makes it unsuitable for most finished YouTube publishing.

Descript Hobbyist: best for occasional solo creators
Hobbyist costs $24 month to month or $16 per month when billed annually. It includes:
- 10 media hours per month
- 400 AI credits per month
- 1080p watermark-free export
- Underlord access
- Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Create Clips, and other AI tools
- AI Speech with custom voice clones and Video Regenerate
Hobbyist is not a stripped-down editor. It contains the core features that make Descript interesting. Its constraints are production headroom, export resolution, AI capacity, and the inability to purchase top-ups.
I would choose it for a monthly podcast, a light biweekly publishing schedule, occasional client interviews, or a solo creator who does mostly manual transcript editing. It is also the safer paid starting point if you are unsure how much Descript will become part of your workflow.
The problem appears when Descript becomes important. You cannot buy additional media minutes or AI credits on Hobbyist. If you hit a limit, the practical answer is to upgrade rather than add a small temporary bundle.
Descript Creator: the practical plan for regular publishing
Creator costs $35 month to month or $24 per month when billed annually. It includes:
- 30 media hours per month
- 800 AI credits per month
- 4K watermark-free export
- Full Underlord access and more than 20 AI tools
- Current AI video-generation models
- Unlimited royalty-free stock media
- Access to media-hour and AI-credit top-ups
- Support for a team of up to three paid editor seats
This is the plan I would recommend to most people publishing every week. The jump from 10 to 30 media hours is substantial, and the AI allowance doubles. More importantly, Creator removes several workflow ceilings: 4K export, full AI access, stock media, and top-ups.
Creator is not automatically cheap. If you rely heavily on avatars, dubbing, lip sync, generated video, or repeated Underlord experiments, 800 credits can still disappear. It is best value for creators using AI selectively to speed up editing—not for treating every AI tool as unlimited.
Descript Business: buy it for team features, not just 10 extra hours
Business costs $65 month to month or $50 per person per month when billed annually. It includes 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, 4K export, Brand Studio, translation and dubbing in more than 30 languages with proofreading, custom avatars, priority support with an SLA, and support for up to five separately billed editor seats.
The raw allowance is better, but that is not the main reason to upgrade. Creator already provides 30 media hours. Business makes sense when an organization needs shared brand controls, multilingual output, avatar production, priority support, or a larger collaboration structure.
For a solo YouTuber who simply needs a few more hours, Business is difficult to justify. For a marketing team producing branded videos in several languages, the added workflow controls may be more valuable than the credits themselves.
Descript Hobbyist vs Creator: the decision that matters

The annual-price difference is only $8 per month. For that, Creator triples the media allowance, doubles the AI credits, adds 4K, unlocks the broader AI and stock-media toolkit, and gives you a way to buy extra usage. That is why Creator is the stronger value once Descript becomes a weekly production tool.
Hobbyist still wins when your use is genuinely light. Paying for 30 hours and 4K has no value if you edit one 30-minute audio episode each month and publish in 1080p.
Descript top-ups: buy extra usage or upgrade?
Creator and Business users can purchase one-time top-ups. They are shared across the Drive, used only after the monthly allowance is exhausted, and expire 12 months after purchase.

Top-ups make sense for a temporary client project, a launch month, or a seasonal production batch. They are less convincing as a monthly habit.
For example, moving from monthly Creator to monthly Business costs an additional $30 and adds 700 monthly AI credits plus 10 media hours, Brand Studio, translation, avatars, and support. Buying the smallest 350-credit top-up costs $35. If you need that top-up every month, compare Business rather than automatically repurchasing it.
The decision is different on annual billing because an upgrade creates a longer commitment. Use one top-up for a genuine spike; upgrade when the overage becomes a predictable part of normal production.

Occasional creator
Best for monthly or light biweekly podcasts, basic 1080p videos, and mostly manual transcript editing.

For a weekly podcast
Start by estimating the total recorded duration, not only the final episode length. Hobbyist can cover four one-hour sessions on media allowance, but Creator is safer if you routinely use Studio Sound, filler-word cleanup, Underlord, promotional clips, and 4K video podcast exports.
If your priority is producing articles, newsletters, quotes, and social copy from the finished recording rather than editing the recording itself, compare Castmagic vs Descript. Paying for Descript’s editing capacity makes less sense if written repurposing is the real job.
For talking-head YouTube videos
Creator is usually the cleanest choice. The 4K export, stock library, broader AI tools, and 30-hour buffer matter more here than for an audio-only podcast. Hobbyist remains adequate for 1080p tutorials if you bring your own B-roll and use AI sparingly.
For automatically creating Shorts
Do not choose a more expensive Descript plan solely for clipping. Descript can create clips, but OpusClip and Vizard are more focused on automatically finding many vertical moments from long videos. Calculate seats before features. Business is priced per editor, so five editors on annual billing represent $250 per month, not $50 total. Decide who genuinely needs an editor seat and who can work as a viewer or project-level collaborator. Business is justified when its brand controls, language tools, support, and shared workflow prevent enough duplicated work—not merely because “team” sounds more professional.

The discounts are substantial, but I would not start with annual billing before testing a real project. Descript’s editing model is unusual. Some people immediately prefer text-based editing; others miss the precision and familiarity of a traditional timeline.
My preferred sequence is simple:
- Use Free for one representative project.
- Pay monthly if you need a longer production test.
- Move to annual only after you understand your media and AI usage.
One useful comparison: monthly Hobbyist and annual Creator both have a headline rate of $24 per month. If you know you will use Descript for a full year, Creator offers much more capacity for the same displayed monthly amount—but it requires paying $288 upfront.
My final Descript plan recommendation
Choose Free if you have never edited through a transcript. Its purpose is proving whether the workflow fits you.
Choose Hobbyist if you publish occasionally, need 1080p, stay comfortably below 10 media hours, and will not depend heavily on AI generation. It is a good plan when Descript is useful but not central to your business.
Choose Creator if you publish weekly, work in 4K, use Studio Sound or Underlord regularly, want stock media, or need room for production spikes. This is my default recommendation for serious solo creators.
Choose Business when the team features solve an actual organizational problem: brand governance, multiple languages, custom avatars, support requirements, or several editors. Do not buy it simply for an extra 10 media hours.
Most importantly, measure one normal project before committing. Look at both media minutes and AI credits in the Usage tab. That small test is more reliable than any generic claim that a certain plan supports “four podcasts” or “ten videos,” because two creators can process the same recording with completely different AI costs.
